About the program

The Junior Championship Program presently comprises more than 40 teams, both male and female, ranging between the ages of 10-19 years of age. Our junior teams compete against associations throughout Victoria each Friday night in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) representative basketball program. Being involved in the VJBL means over 60 home games held at Eagle Stadium on a monthly basis, bringing visitors from all across the state into our stadium.

The aims of the VJBL are to:

  • •  Encourage associations to develop teams that compete at the highest level
  • •  Deliver a competition format that showcases basketball excellence in Victoria
  • •  Provide a key development pathway for athletes, transitioning from domestic basketball to state, national, and international representation
  • •  Offer players, officials, and spectators access to high-quality, competitive basketball experiences

The VJBL is the platform where Victorian state representatives are identified and remains the cornerstone pathway for the majority of NBL and WNBL athletes.

What is Representative Basketball?

Wyndham Basketball’s representative program strongly aligns with the Basketball Victoria & Basketball Australia player development pathway, and provides opportunities for all players to play at the highest level they can achieve.

Victorian Junior Basketball League incorporates competitions conducted state-wide and provides the highest level of junior competition in Victoria. VJBL boasts over 1200 representative teams from 54 associations across Victoria.

The competition includes the U12 to U20 age groups, in a graded structure from Victorian Junior Championship League to the Regional Competition. The Victorian Junior Championship League serves as a benchmark for excellence in competition and is the premier competition for junior teams in Victoria.

The VJBL has been a key pathway for many of Australia’s best players including Andrew Bogut, Penny Taylor, Andrew Gaze & Michelle Timms just to name a few.

Playing Representative basketball requires attendance at two weekly practice sessions and a Friday night or Sunday afternoon (U20) game. All of our VJBL Representative Teams have coaches that are suitably qualified and experienced. Coaches work under the guidance of our Director of Coaching (DOC)

Wyndham Basketball encourages all players looking to take their game to the next level to attend representative tryouts.

WBA Guide for Representative Team Managers
We are excited to announce the launch of our Wyndham Basketball Association Representative Team Managers Guide, which explains the responsibilities of Representative Team Managers throughout the year.  For those of you who are new in the role, you should find this helpful in getting you up and running.

WBA Represenative Program – Domestic Policy

If a player wishes to play representative basketball with the WBA, then it is expected that the player will also participate in the WBA domestic competition. If a player is unable to participate in the WBA domestic competition then the player (or, if under 18, their parent/guardian) must submit an exemption request in writing using the below exemption request form.

SHOT CLOCK

In Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) games, the shot clock resets to 24 seconds for a new possession, which occurs after a made basket, a foul, a turnover, or a defensive rebound. However, for the under 14 age group, the 24-second clock does not start until the ball enters the team’s frontcourt

. When a team loses possession after a shot attempt (e.g., to a loose ball), the shot clock remains with the offensive team until the defense gains clear possession.

Shot clock rules

  • Reset to 24 seconds: The clock resets to 24 seconds for the new possession in these situations:
    • • After a made basket
    • • On a foul (including technical fouls)
    • • After a turnover
    • • Following a defensive rebound

  • Frontcourt rule for Under 14s: For all Under 14 games, the 24-second shot clock is not started until the ball legally enters the frontcourt.

  • Whistles and pauses:
    • • The shot clock is paused on every whistle.
    • • It is reset to 24 seconds only if there is a change of team control.
    • • If the same team retains possession, the clock is not reset.
